Chapter on Mosques - Description of the mosque founded on piety.
Hadith 1605
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ أَبِي أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، قَالَ : اخْتَلَفَ رَجُلانِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الَّذِي أُسِّسَ عَلَى التَّقْوَى ، فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا : هُوَ مَسْجِدُ الْمَدِينَةِ ، وَقَالَ الآخَرُ : هُوَ مَسْجِدُ قُبَاءَ ، فَأَتَوَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : " هُوَ مَسْجِدِي هَذَا " .
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was a disagreement between two men regarding the mosque which was founded on piety. One of them said that (by this) is meant the mosque of Madinah Munawwarah (i.e., Masjid Nabawi), and the other said it is Masjid Quba. They both came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: “By this is meant this mosque of mine.”
