Chapter on Prayer Times - Clarification that "half the night" means the middle of the night.
Hadith 1540
أَخْبَرَنَا الْقَطَّانُ ، بِالرَّقَّةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَابُورَ الرُّومِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْعَطَّارُ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْعُمَرِيُّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَوْلا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لأَمَرْتُهُمْ بِالسِّوَاكِ مَعَ الْوُضُوءِ ، وَلأَخَّرْتُ الْعِشَاءَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ نِصْفِ اللَّيْلِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If I did not fear hardship for my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every ablution, and to delay the 'Isha prayer until one-third of the night (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps the words are) until half of the night."
