Chapter on Prayer Times - The reason why the Prophet did not always delay the night prayer.
Hadith 1539
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ ، بِحَرَّانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَوْلا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، لأَخَّرْتُ الْعِشَاءَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ شَطْرِ اللَّيْلِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If I did not fear hardship for my Ummah, I would have delayed the ‘Isha prayer until one third of the night (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) or until half of the night."
