Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrates from his father: A man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the times of prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Perform the prayer with us at these two times. When the sun declined, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer. The narrator states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed the Asr prayer when the sun was still high, bright, and shining. Then he performed the Maghrib prayer after the sun had set, the Isha prayer after the twilight had disappeared, and the Fajr prayer in darkness. The narrator states: The next day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him). He gave the Iqamah for Zuhr at a cooler time, then, by his order, gave the Iqamah for Asr when the sun was still bright. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed this prayer a little later than the time he had performed it the previous day. Then, by his order, the Iqamah for Maghrib was given when the twilight was about to disappear. By his order, the Iqamah for Isha was given after one-third of the night had passed, and by his order, the Iqamah for Fajr was given when it had become light. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked: Where is the person who asked about the times of prayer? He replied: I am here, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: The time for your prayers is between what you have seen.
