Warning against abandoning prayer: Previous nations neglected Asr prayer when it was presented to them
Hadith 1471
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُكْرَمِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْبَرْتِيُّ ، وَأَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ خَيْرِ بْنِ نُعَيْمٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ هُبَيْرَةَ السَّبَائِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمٍ الْجَيْشَانِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَصْرَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ ، قَالَ : صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَصْرَ ، فَلَمْا انْصَرَفَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّلاةَ عُرِضَتْ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ فَضَيَّعُوهَا وَتَرَكُوهَا ، فَمَنْ صَلاهَا مِنْكُمْ ، كَانَ لَهُ أَجْرُهَا ضِعْفِينِ ، وَلا صَلاةَ بَعْدَهَا حَتَّى يَرَى الشَّاهِدَ " ، وَالشَّاهِدُ : النَّجْمُ .
Sayyiduna Abu Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the ‘Asr prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: “This prayer was also presented to the people before you, but they neglected it and abandoned it. Whoever among you performs it will receive double the reward, and after it, no prayer is to be performed until the ‘Shahid’ (star) becomes visible.” (The narrator states) By ‘Shahid’ is meant a star.
