Obligation of prayer: Number of obligatory prayers in a day and night
Hadith 1450
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ أَخَّرَ الصَّلاةَ يَوْمًا فِي إِمْرَتِهِ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ ، فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ أَخَّرَ الصَّلاةَ يَوْمًا وَهُوَ بِالْكُوفَةِ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُغِيرَةُ مَا هَذَا؟ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ عَلَمْتَ أَنَّ جِبْرِيلَ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ، " نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى ، فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " بِهَذَا أُمِرْتُ " ، قَالَ: أَعْلَمْ مَا تُحَدِّثُ يَا عُرْوَةُ أَوْ إِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَقَامَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقْتَ الصَّلاةِ ، قَالَ: كَذَلِكَ كَانَ بَشِيرُ بْنُ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ . قَالَ قَالَ عُرْوَةُ : وَلَقَدْ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ فِي حُجْرَتِهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَظْهَرَ " .
Ibn Shihab narrates: One day, during his caliphate (or during his governorship), Umar bin Abdul Aziz delayed a prayer. Urwah bin Zubair came to him and informed him that Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) once performed a prayer late. At that time, he was the governor in Kufa. So Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and said: O Mughirah! What have you done? Do you not know that Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) descended, and he performed the prayer, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also performed the prayer. Then he performed the prayer, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also performed the prayer. Then he performed the prayer, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also performed the prayer. Then he performed the prayer, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also performed the prayer. Then he informed: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded regarding this matter. So Umar bin Abdul Aziz said: O Urwah! Consider carefully what you are narrating. Would Sayyiduna Jibreel (peace be upon him) establish the time of prayer for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? So Urwah said: Basheer bin Abu Mas’ud narrated the hadith from his father in the same way. Urwah narrates: Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed me that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the Asr prayer while the sunlight was still in the room of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and it had not yet risen high.
