Relieving oneself: A narration that misled some into thinking it abrogates the previous prohibition
Hadith 1420
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّاقِدُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبَانُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، " يَنْهَانَا أَنْ نَسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةَ ، أَوْ نَسْتَدْبِرَهَا بِفُرُوجِنَا إِذَا أَهْرَقْنَا الْمَاءَ " ، قَالَ : " ثُمَّ رَأَيْتُهُ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ يَبُولُ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to forbid us from facing the Qiblah with our private parts exposed when pouring water, or urinating (i.e., while relieving ourselves). The narrator states: Then, one year before the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) passing, I saw him urinating while facing the Qiblah.
