Hadith 1416
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any person goes to relieve himself, he should neither face the Qiblah nor turn his back towards it while defecating or urinating, but (from the perspective of Madinah) he should face towards the east or the west." Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When we came to Syria, we found toilets built facing the direction of the Qiblah, so we would turn slightly while sitting in them and would seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty.

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "When urinating or defecating, do not face towards the Qiblah nor turn your back towards it, but (according to the direction in Madinah) face towards the east or the west." Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) states: When we came to Syria, there were toilets built facing the Qiblah. The narrator named Nu'man has transmitted these words: they were toilets built facing the Qiblah. Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says, so we would turn our faces away from the Qiblah and would seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "Face towards the east or the west," is a literal command, and in some actions, its generality will be acted upon, whereas the narration transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) specifies this command, that it pertains to the open desert. Toilets or concealed places are not included in this command, and the second specification is that which is established by consensus: that the person whose Qiblah is towards the east or the west, it is obligatory upon him that while defecating or urinating, he should neither face nor turn his back towards that direction, because that is his Qiblah, and a person has been commanded that at the time of relieving himself, he should turn his face or back towards a direction other than the Qiblah.
