Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It was the custom of the Jews that when a woman among them would menstruate, they would expel her from their house. (That is, they would not eat or drink with her) and would not stay with her in their homes. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you about menstruation. Say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation." So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You may do everything with your wife except intercourse." Upon this, the Jews said: "We have noticed that this man opposes us in every matter." Sayyiduna Usayd bin Hudayr and 'Abbad bin Bishr came. Both of them said: "O Messenger of Allah! The Jews have said this, so should we not even have intercourse with our wives during menstruation?" The narrator says: The face of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red, to the extent that we thought the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was very angry with them. Both of them left, then milk was presented to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) called both of them. From this, we realized that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was not very angry with them. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them both (that milk to drink).
