Wiping over leather socks and similar: Permitting wiping for both travelers and residents for a set period only
Hadith 1329
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ الرَّيَانِيُّ بِبُسْتَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زَنْجُوَيْهِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفِيانُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَدَلِيِّ ، عَنْ خُزَيْمَةَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، قَالَ : " جَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَسْحَ عَلَى الْخُفِينِ ثَلاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ لِلَمْسَافِرِ ، وَيَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً لِلَمْقِيمِ ، وَلَوْ مَضَى السَّائِلُ عَلَى مَسْأَلَتِهِ لَجَعَلَهَا خَمْسًا " .
Sayyiduna Khuzaimah bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted wiping over the leather socks for three days for a traveler and for one day and one night for a resident. If the questioner had continued his question, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have allowed it for five days as well.
