Chapter on Dry Ablution – Report that may mislead the unskilled in hadith science into thinking it contradicts previous reports
Hadith 1310
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ ابْنُ أَخِي جُوَيْرِيَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : " تَيَمَّمْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى الْمَنَاكِبِ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : كَانَ هَذَا حَيْثُ نَزَلَ آيَةُ التَّيَمُّمِ قَبْلَ تَعْلِيمِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَمَّارًا كَيْفِيةَ التَّيَمُّمِ ، ثُمَّ عَلَمْهُ ضَرْبَةً وَاحِدَةً لِلْوَجْهِ وَالْكَفِينِ ، لَمْا سَأَلَ عَمَّارٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ التَّيَمُّمِ .
Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We performed tayammum up to the shoulders along with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This was at the time when the verse regarding the command of tayammum had been revealed, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had not yet taught Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) the method of tayammum. Then afterwards, while teaching him, he explained that for the face and both hands, only one strike will be made. This was when Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) had asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about tayammum.
