Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were traveling with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). We traveled throughout the night, and when the last part of the night came, sleep overcame us, and for a traveler, nothing is dearer than sleep. The heat of the sun woke us up. Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The first among those who woke up was such-and-such person, then such-and-such person, and then such-and-such person. The narrator Abu Raja mentioned their names, but the narrator Awf forgot their names. The fourth person to wake up was Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was present, we would not wake him up. He would wake up by himself. The reason for this is that we could not know what situation might have occurred with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) during sleep. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) woke up and saw the situation, the narrator says: He was a man of a loud voice and a stern temperament. The narrator says he proclaimed the takbir (Allahu Akbar) in a loud voice and kept proclaiming the takbir. His voice remained loud until, because of his voice, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, the people complained to him about what had happened, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no harm. (The narrator is unsure about a word here.) You all move on. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went a little further, then he dismounted, then he asked for water, performed ablution, and the call to prayer was given for the prayer. He led the people in prayer. When he finished the prayer, there was a man who was apart; he had not prayed with the people. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O so-and-so, what is the reason you did not pray with the people? He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I became junub (in a state of major ritual impurity), and there is no water (for bathing). So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is obligatory upon you to use earth (i.e., perform tayammum); it will suffice for you. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) moved on, and the people complained to him of being thirsty. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and called for such-and-such person (Abu Raja mentioned his name, but Awf forgot it), and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Both of you go and search for water for us. (Both of them set out.) They encountered a woman riding her camel between two water skins. Both of them asked the woman where water could be found. She replied: Yesterday at this time I was at the water (i.e., it is a day's journey away), and there were no men in our tribe. The narrator says: Both of them said to the woman: Then come (with us). She asked: To whom? Both of them replied: To the Messenger of Allah. She asked: Is he the one who is called irreligious? Both of them said: He is the one you mean. Now come along. Then both of them brought the woman to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the whole incident. The narrator says: The woman was made to dismount from her camel. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a vessel and poured water from the water skins into it (the narrator is unsure about a word here). He kept the mouth of the water skin closed and opened the lower hole, and it was announced among the people: Take water for yourselves and give (your animals, etc.) to drink as well. The narrator says: Then whoever wished drank, and whoever wished took water for giving to others. The last person to be given a water vessel was the one who had become junub. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go and pour it over your body. The narrator says: The woman stood watching what was happening with her water. The narrator says: By Allah! When so much water had been taken from it, it seemed to us as if the water skins were fuller than before. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gather food for this woman. The narrator says: Dates of Ajwa and sattu (roasted barley flour) were gathered for the woman until a large amount of food was collected for her, and the people put it in a cloth. She was made to mount her camel, and the cloth was placed in front of her. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the woman: Do you know this? By Allah! We did not diminish your water at all, but Allah Almighty gave us water. The narrator says: The woman returned to her people, though she was delayed. They asked: O so-and-so, where were you? She replied: It is a strange thing. Two men met me, took me to the person about whom it is said that he is irreligious. They treated me in such and such a way (i.e., she described what had happened), and said: By Allah! He is the greatest magician between here and there, or he is truly the Messenger of Allah. The narrator says: After that, the Muslims of that area attacked the surrounding polytheists, but did not attack the village where the woman lived. The woman said to her people: By Allah! These people are deliberately leaving you alone, so do you have any interest in Islam? So her people accepted her word and entered Islam.

He poured water from the water skins (the narrator is unsure about a word here), then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed their mouths and opened the lower holes. It was announced among the people that they could take water and give water to their animals, etc. The narrator says: Then whoever wished, drank, and whoever wished, gave water to others. The last person to be given water was the one who had become junub. A vessel of water was given to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Go and pour it over yourself.” The narrator says: The woman stood watching what was happening with her water. The narrator says: By Allah! However much water was taken out, it seemed to us as if the water skins were fuller than before. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Gather food for this woman.” So dates of ‘ajwa, flour, and sattu (roasted barley) were gathered for her, until the people collected a lot of grain for her. The people put it in a cloth and, seating the woman on her camel, placed the bag of grain in front of her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the woman: “You should know, by Allah! We have not diminished your water at all, but Allah has given us water.” Then the woman returned to her family. She arrived late, so they asked: “O so-and-so, what delayed you?” She said: “A very amazing thing happened. Two men met me, took me with them, and brought me to the one who is called irreligious. Then they treated me in such and such a way”—that is, she described what had happened. “By Allah! From here to there, in this area, he is the greatest magician among them.” The narrator says: The woman raised her index and middle fingers first towards the sky, then towards the earth (and said this), or perhaps he is truly the Messenger of Allah. The narrator says: After that, the Muslims attacked the polytheists in the surrounding areas, but did not attack the village where the woman lived. One day, the woman said to her people: “I think these people are deliberately leaving you alone. So, do you have any interest in Islam?” The people accepted her advice and entered Islam. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Abu Raja bin Ataridi’s name is Imran bin Taym. He died at the age of 120 years.
