Chapter on Skins of Dead Animals – Clarification that permission to benefit from the skins of dead animals is only after tanning, not before
Hadith 1285
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بَحْرٍ الْبَزَّارُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْعَدَنِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفِيانُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الزُّهْرِيَّ ، يُحَدِّثُ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ مَيْمُونَةَ ، قَالَتْ : مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَاةٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ مَيْتَةٍ أُعْطِيَتْهَا مَوْلاةٌ لَمْيْمُونَةَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَلا أَخَذُوا إِهَابِهَا فَدَبَغُوهَا ، فَانْتَفَعُوا بِهَا ؟ فَقَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّمَا حُرِّمَ أَكْلُهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates this incident. Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a dead goat that had been given to the slave girl of Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) as charity. He said: Why did they not take its skin, tan it, and benefit from it? The people said: O Messenger of Allah! It is dead. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It has been made unlawful to eat it.
