Chapter on Vessels – Clarification that these commands are to be done with mentioning Allah’s name
Hadith 1272
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى الْقَطَّانُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَغْلِقْ بَابَكَ ، وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لا يَفْتَحُ بَابًا مُغْلَقًا ، وَأَطْفِئْ مِصْبَاحَكَ ، وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، وَأَوْكِ سِقَاءَكَ ، وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، وَخَمِّرْ إِنَاءَكَ ، وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، وَلَوْ بِعُودٍ يُعْرَضُ عَلَيْهِ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Close the doors by taking the name of Allah, for indeed, Satan does not open closed doors. Extinguish your lamps by taking the name of Allah, and close the mouth of your water-skins by taking the name of Allah. Cover your vessels by taking the name of Allah, even if you place a piece of wood over them."
