Chapter on Water – Report refuting the claim that if a person in a state of major impurity falls into a well intending to bathe, it makes the well water impure
Hadith 1259
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، بِبُسْتَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْعَتَكِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلِ ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : لَقِيَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَنَا جُنُبٌ ، فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِي ، فَانْسَلَلْتُ مِنْهُ ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ ، فَاغْتَسَلْتُ ، ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ فَجَلَسْتُ مَعَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَيْنَ كُنْتَ يَا أَبَا هِرٍّ ؟ " ، قُلْتُ : لَقِيتَنِي وَأَنَا جُنُبٌ ، فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُجَالِسَكَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لا يَنْجُسُ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, met me while I was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). I continued walking with him, and he was holding my hand. Then I left from his presence, performed ghusl (ritual bath), and returned to him and sat with him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: O Abu Hurairah, where did you go? I replied: When you met me, I was in a state of janabah, and I did not like to sit with you in that condition. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Indeed, a believer is never impure.
