Chapter on Ghusl for Jumu’ah – Clarification that people used to attend Friday in their work clothes, so they were commanded to bathe
Hadith 1236
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفِيانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حِسَابٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ النَّاسُ مُهَّانَ أَنْفُسِهِمْ ، فَكَانُوا يَرُوحُونَ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ بِهَيْئَتِهِمْ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُمْ : لَوِ اغْتَسَلْتُمْ " .
Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the beginning, people used to do their work themselves, then they would come for Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) in that same state (because of which a bad smell would spread), so it was said to them: If you take a bath (it would be appropriate).
