Chapter on Rules for the Junub – Clarification that ablution for the junub before sleep is not an obligatory command
Hadith 1216
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفِيانُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ ، أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَيَنَامُ أحدنا وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ ؟ فَقَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، وَيَتَوَضَّأُ إِنْ شَاءَ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates regarding Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): Can a person sleep in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity)? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes, if he wishes, he may perform wudu (ablution) and then (sleep).
