Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that sometimes he becomes junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) at night. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perform ablution, wash your private part, and then go to sleep. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), “Perform ablution and wash your private part,” is a recommendation, and his statement, “then go to sleep,” is a declaration of permissibility. In the statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), “wash your private part,” there is no evidence that semen is impure, because the command to wash the private part was given since, when a man has intercourse, something impure may touch his private part, and even if this does not happen, generally a man needs to urinate before performing ghusl, so due to the impurity that may be present, the command to wash the private part was given. It was not given because semen is impure. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to scrape it off the garment of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray in that garment.
