Chapter on Ghusl – Clarification that in early Islam, the obligation was to wash what touched the woman and then perform ablution for prayer, not ghusl
Hadith 1169
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو أَيُّوبَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، الرَّجُلُ يَأْتِي الْمَرْأَةَ فَلا يُنْزِلُ ؟ قَالَ : " يَغْسِلُ مَا مَسَّ الْمَرْأَةَ مِنْهُ ، وَيَتَوَضَّأُ وَيُصَلِّي " .
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me of this. He says: I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! A man goes to his wife (i.e., has intercourse with her) and he does not ejaculate." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The woman should wash the moisture that has touched her and perform ablution, then offer prayer."
