Chapter on Ghusl – Clarification that Umm Sulaym’s question about a woman seeing in her dream what a man sees refers to a wet dream
Hadith 1165
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَتْ : جَاءَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ امْرَأَةُ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ ، هَلْ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ غُسْلٌ إِذَا هِيَ احْتَلَمَتْ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِذَا رَأَتِ الْمَاءَ " .
Lady Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates this statement from her mother, Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): The wife of Abu Talhah, Umm Sulaim, came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, Allah does not shy away from the truth. If a woman experiences a wet dream, is ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory upon her? The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes, if she sees water (i.e., semen), (meaning when her semen has been discharged).
