Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever bathes a deceased person should perform ghusl (full ritual bath), and whoever carries the deceased should perform wudu (ablution)." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, it is implied that this applies when there is no barrier between them. The evidence that what is meant here is the wudu without which prayer is not permissible is that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned wudu along with ghusl in two similar matters.
