Chapter on Nullifiers of Ablution – Report that may mislead the unskilled in hadith science into thinking it is defective
Hadith 1126
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ثَوْرِ بْنَ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الصَّلاةِ فِي مَبَاتِ الْغَنَمِ ، فَرَخَّصَ فِيهَا ، وَسُئِلَ عَنِ الصَّلاةِ فِي مَبَاتِ الإِبِلِ فَنَهَى عَنْهَا ، وَسُئِلَ عَنِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنْ لُحُومِ الْغَنَمِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنْ شِئْتَ فَتَوَضَّأْ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَلا تَتَوَضَّأْ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَبُو ثَوْرِ بْنُ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ اسْمُهُ : جَعْفَرٌ ، وَكُنْيَةُ أَبِيهِ : أَبُو ثَوْرٍ ، فَجَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ هُوَ : أَبُو ثَوْرِ بْنُ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، رَوَى عَنْهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ ، وَأَشْعَثُ بْنُ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ ، وَسِمَاكُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ . فَمَنْ لَمْ يُحْكِمْ صِنَاعَةَ الْحَدِيثِ تَوَهَّمَ أَنَّهُمَا رَجُلانِ مَجْهُولانِ ، فَتَفَهَّمُوا رَحِمَكُمُ اللَّهُ كَيْلا تُغَالِطُوا فِيهِ .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports regarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he was asked about performing prayer in sheep enclosures, so he permitted it. And he was asked about camel enclosures, so he forbade it. He was asked about performing ablution after eating sheep meat, so he said: If you wish, perform ablution; if you wish, do not perform ablution. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Abu Thawr bin Ikrimah bin Jabir bin Samurah, his name is Ja'far. His father's kunyah is Abu Thawr. Ja'far bin Abu Thawr is Abu Thawr bin Ikrimah bin Jabir bin Samurah. Regarding him, 'Uthman bin 'Abdullah bin Mawhib, Ash'ath bin Abu Sha'tha, and Simak bin Harb have narrated ahadith. Whoever does not have expertise in the science of hadith falls into the misunderstanding that these are two unknown persons. Therefore, you should acquire this understanding—may Allah have mercy on you—so that you do not fall into any misunderstanding regarding this.
