Chapter on Nullifiers of Ablution – Report indicating that the command to perform ablution after touching the private part refers to the ablution required for prayer
Hadith 1115
أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ بُسْرَةَ ، قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ مَسَّ فَرْجَهُ ، فَلْيُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : لَوْ كَانَ الْمُرَادُ مِنْهُ غَسْلَ الْيَدَيْنِ قَالَ بَعْضُ النَّاسِ : لَمَّا قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلْيُعِدِ الْوُضُوءَ إِذِ الإِعَادَةُ لا تَكُونُ إِلا لِلْوُضُوءِ الَّذِي هُوَ لِلصَّلاةِ .
Busrah narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever touches his private part should perform ablution again." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) If what was meant was to wash both hands, as some people have said, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not have said: "Perform ablution again," because only that ablution can be repeated which is done for prayer.
