Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and with me were two individuals from the Ash'ar tribe. One of them was on my right side and the other on my left. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was using a miswak at that time. Both of them requested an official responsibility from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: By the One Who has sent you with the truth, they did not inform me about what was in their minds, nor did I have any idea that they would request an official responsibility. (Sayyiduna Abu Musa narrates) It is as if I am still seeing that scene when the miswak was under the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) lip, which he was chewing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We do not appoint in our (state) affairs the one who seeks (the position), so you both go." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, and after him, he sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).
