Chapter of Supplications - Requirement to suffice with praising Allah for guidance and avoid overburdening supplication
Hadith 982
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا حَضَرَ أَبَا طَالِبٍ الْوَفَاةُ ، جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَجَدَ عِنْدَهُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ ، وَعَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَمِّ ، قُلْ : لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدْ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ " . قَالَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ : يَا أَبَا طَالِبٍ أَتَرْغَبُ عَنْ مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ؟ قَالَ : فَلَمْ يَزَلِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعْرِضُهَا عَلَيْهِ وَيُعِيدُ لَهُ تِلْكَ الْمَقَالَةَ ، حَتَّى قَالَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ آخِرَ مَا كَلَّمَهُمْ هُوَ عَلَى مِلَّةِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَأَبَى أَنْ يَقُولَ : لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ . فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ مَا لَمْ أُنْهَ عَنْكَ " فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ : مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ سورة التوبة آية 113 وَأُنْزِلَتْ فِي أَبِي طَالِبٍ إِنَّكَ لا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ سورة القصص آية 56 .
Saeed bin Musayyib narrates from his father: When the time of Abu Talib’s death approached, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came. At that time, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah were also present with Abu Talib. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: O uncle! Say “La ilaha illallah” (There is no god but Allah), so that I may testify for you before Allah because of this statement. Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said: O Abu Talib! Are you turning away from the religion of Abdul Muttalib? The narrator states: The Prophet (peace be upon him) continued to present this offer to them and kept repeating this statement, until the last thing Abu Talib said to them was that he was on the religion of Abdul Muttalib. He refused to say “La ilaha illallah.” So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I will continue to seek forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.” Then this verse was revealed: “It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the people of Hell.” (The narrator states) This verse was revealed regarding Abu Talib: “Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are guided.”
