Chapter of Supplications - Recommendation to refrain from seeking forgiveness for polytheist relatives
Hadith 981
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى الْمِصْرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقِ بْنِ الأَجْدَعِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ يَوْمًا ، فَخَرَجْنَا مَعَهُ ، حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْمَقَابِرِ ، فَأَمَرَنَا فَجَلَسْنَا ، ثُمَّ تَخَطَّى الْقُبُورَ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى قَبْرٍ مِنْهَا فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَنَاجَاهُ طَوِيلا ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَاكِيًا ، فَبَكَيْنَا لِبُكَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا ، فَتَلَقَّاهُ عُمَرُ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ، وَقَالَ : مَا الَّذِي أَبْكَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَقَدْ أَبْكَيْتَنَا وَأَفْزَعْتَنَا ؟ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا ، فَقَالَ : " أَفْزَعَكُمْ بُكَائِي ؟ " قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ الْقَبْرَ الَّذِي رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُنَاجِي قَبْرُ آمِنَةَ بِنْتِ وَهْبٍ ، وَإِنِّي سَأَلْتُ رَبِّي الاسْتِغْفَارَ لَهَا ، فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي ، فَنَزَلَ عَلَيَّ : مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ سورة التوبة آية 113 فَأَخَذَنِي مَا يَأْخُذُ الْوَلَدُ لِلْوَالِدِ مِنَ الرِّقَةِ ، فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي أَبْكَانِي . أَلا وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ ، فَزُورُوهَا ، فَإِنَّهَا تُزَهِّدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَتُرَغِّبُ فِي الآخِرَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and we also accompanied him. When we reached the graveyard, he instructed us, so we sat down. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked among the graves, and went to one of the graves. He sat beside it and engaged in a lengthy supplication there. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, he was weeping. Because of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, we also began to weep. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was in front of him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Why are you weeping? You have made us weep as well and have brought us to a state of lamentation. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the hand of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), then turned towards us and asked: Did you become distressed because of my weeping? We replied: Yes. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The grave which you saw, where I was supplicating, was the grave of (my mother) Amina bint Wahb. I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but I was not granted permission. This verse was revealed to me: “It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists.” So the same feeling overcame me as a child has for his mother. This made me weep. Beware! I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now you should visit them, for they make one disinterested in the world and inclined towards the Hereafter.
