Mus'ab bin Sa'd bin Waqqas narrates from his father: A Bedouin came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me some words that I may recite. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Recite this: "There is no deity except Allah, He is the only One, and He has no partner. Allah is the Greatest, and all praise is due to Allah alone. Allah is free from all defects, and He is the Lord of all the worlds. Nothing can happen without the help of Allah; He is the Most High and the Organizer, the Dominant and the Wise." The man said: These words are for my Lord, what will be for me? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Say this: "O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy on me, keep me steadfast on guidance, and grant me sustenance." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, the words used, "O Allah! Guide me. O Allah! I ask You for guidance," and similar words, mean to remain steadfast on guidance and to increase in it, because it is impossible for a believer to ask for additional guidance when Allah has already granted him guidance.
