Chapter of Supplications - What is required of humbling oneself to Allah for steadfastness of the heart in obedience
Hadith 943
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو ثَوْرٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلانِيَّ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّوَّاسَ بْنَ سَمْعَانَ ، يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ: " مَا مِنْ قَلْبٍ إِلا بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، إِنْ شَاءَ أَقَامَهُ ، وَإِنْ شَاءَ أَزَاغَهُ " . قَالَ: قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ: " يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ، ثَبِّتْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى دِينِكَ " . قَالَ: " وَالْمِيزَانُ بِيَدِ الرَّحْمَنِ يَرْفَعُ قَوْمًا وَيَخْفِضُ آخَرِينَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Nawas bin Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Every (person's) heart is between two fingers of the Most Merciful. If He wills, He keeps it firm, and if He wills, He turns it away." The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to supplicate: "O Turner of the hearts, keep our hearts firm upon Your religion." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: "The balance is in the hand of the Most Merciful. He grants honor to one nation and lowers others. This will continue until the Day of Resurrection."
