Chapter of Supplications - A report that may mislead those unfamiliar with hadith science into thinking it contradicts the previous two reports
Hadith 921
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الأَغَرِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالا : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُمْهِلُ حَتَّى إِذَا ذَهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الأَوَّلُ ، نَزَلَ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا ، فَيَقُولُ جَلَّ وَعَلا : هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ ؟ هَلْ مِنْ تَائِبٍ ؟ هَلْ مِنْ سَائِلٍ ؟ هَلْ مِنْ دَاعٍ ؟ حَتَّى يَنْفَجِرَ الصُّبْحُ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : فِي خَبَرِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ الَّذِي ذَكَرْنَاهُ ، أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْزِلُ حَتَّى يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرُ ، وَفِي خَبَرِ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنِ الأَغَرِّ أَنَّهُ يَنْزِلُ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الأَوَّلِ ، وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ نُزُولُهُ فِي بَعْضِ اللَّيَالِي حَتَّى يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الآخِرُ ، وَفِي بَعْضِهَا حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الأَوَّلُ ، حَتَّى لا يَكُونَ بَيْنَ الْخَبَرَيْنِ تَهَاتُرٌ وَلا تَضَادٌّ .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah Almighty waits, until when one third of the night has passed, our Lord descends towards the sky of the world. Our Lord says: Is there anyone seeking forgiveness? Is there anyone repenting? Is there anyone asking? Is there anyone supplicating? (The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:) This continues until the true dawn.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Imam Malik has narrated from Zuhri, as we have mentioned, that when one third of the night remains, Allah Almighty descends. And in the narration transmitted by Abu Ishaq from Al-Agharr, it is mentioned that He descends until one third of the night has passed. So, there is a possibility in this that in some nights He descends when one third of the night remains, and in some nights He descends when the initial one third of the night has passed. In this way, there will be no difference or contradiction between the two narrations.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Imam Malik has narrated from Zuhri, as we have mentioned, that when one third of the night remains, Allah Almighty descends.
