Chapter on Supplications – On the greatest name of Allah, by which if one asks, he is granted
Hadith 893
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَوْلَى ثَقِيفٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ ابْنُ أَخِي أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا فِي الْحَلْقَةِ ، وَرَجُلٌ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي ، فَلَمَّا رَكَعَ سَجَدَ وَتَشَهَّدَ ، دَعَا ، فَقَالَ فِي دُعَائِهِ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ ، لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ الْحَنَّانُ الْمَنَّانُ ، بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ ، يَا ذَا الْجَلالِ وَالإِكْرَامِ ، يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيَّامُ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتَدْرُونَ بِمَا دَعَا ؟ " قَالُوا : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ . فَقَالَ : " وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ ، لَقَدْ دَعَا بِاسْمِهِ الْعَظِيمِ الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ ، وَإِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : حَفْصٌ هَذَا : هُوَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ أَخُو إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ أَبِي أَنَسٍ لأُمِّهِ .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was sitting in a gathering with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). A man was performing prayer. When he went into bowing (ruku‘), he prostrated and recited the tashahhud, then while supplicating he said: “O Allah! I ask You, indeed all praise is due to You, there is no deity except You, You are the Most Compassionate and the Bestower of favors, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of Majesty and Honor, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. O Allah! I ask You.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: Do you know what this person has supplicated with? The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, he has supplicated to Allah by His Greatest Name; when He is called upon by it, He answers, and when asked by it, He gives. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator named Hafs is Hafs bin Abdullah bin Abu Talhah, who is the brother of Ishaq, and is the son of the maternal half-brother of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
