Chapter on Supplications – On the gesture of pointing with the finger when supplicating to Allah
Hadith 882
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ رُوَيْبَةَ ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى بِشْرَ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ رَافِعًا يَدَيْهِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، فَقَالَ : " قَبَّحَ اللَّهُ هَاتَيْنِ الْيَدَيْنِ ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا يَزِيدُ عَلَى أَنْ يَقُولَ بِيَدِهِ كَذَا ، وَأَشَارَ بِأُصْبُعِهِ لِلسُّبْحَةِ " .
It is narrated about Sayyiduna ‘Ammarah bin Ruwaybah that he saw Bishr bin Marwan raising both his hands while supplicating on the pulpit, so he said: May Allah make these two hands ugly; I have not seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) do more than this. He said this while pointing with his index finger.
