Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “(Sometimes) a person is deprived of sustenance because of committing a sin, and only supplication can avert destiny, and only righteousness increases life.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The meaning of the statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in this hadith is not general. That is, the sustenance written in a person’s fate is not withheld from him because of sin, but rather its purity is tainted. When he reflects on his situation after the fact, and a person’s constant supplication makes the decree of destiny acceptable for him. It is as if, by feeling the pain less, he puts it aside, and righteousness purifies a person’s life, to the extent that he feels as if, because of the comfort in his life, his lifespan has increased. And generally, these things are found very rarely.
