Chapter on Remembrance – On the narration indicating that growing things without souls glorify Allah as long as they are fresh
Hadith 824
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ وَهْبِ بْنِ أَبِي كَرِيمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ أَبِي أُنَيْسَةَ ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا نَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَمَرَرْنَا عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ ، فَقَامَ ، فَقُمْنَا مَعَهُ ، فَجَعَلَ لَوْنُهُ يَتَغَيَّرُ حَتَّى رَعَدَ كُمُّ قَمِيصِهِ ، فَقُلْنَا : مَا لَكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " مَا تَسْمَعُونَ مَا أَسْمَعُ ؟ " قُلْنَا : وَمَا ذَاكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " هَذَانِ رَجُلانِ يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي قُبُورِهِمَا عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا فِي ذَنْبٍ هَيِّنٍ " ، قُلْنَا : مِمَّ ذَلِكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " كَانَ أَحَدُهُمَا لا يَسْتَنْزِهُ مِنَ الْبَوْلِ ، وَكَانَ الآخَرُ يُؤْذِي النَّاسَ بِلِسَانِهِ ، وَيَمْشِي بَيْنَهُمْ بِالنَّمِيمَةِ " ، فَدَعَا بِجَرِيدَتَيْنِ مِنْ جَرَائِدِ النَّخْلِ ، فَجَعَلَ فِي كُلِّ قَبْرٍ وَاحِدَةً . قُلْنَا : وَهَلْ يَنْفَعُهُمَا ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، يُخَفِّفُ عَنْهُمَا مَا دَامَا رَطْبَتَيْنِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were walking with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). We passed by two graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped, so we also stopped with him. The color of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, to the extent that the sleeve of his shirt began to tremble. We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What has happened to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you hearing what I am hearing? We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is that? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two people are being severely punished in their graves because of two sins. We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: One of them did not protect himself from urine, and the other used to harm people with his tongue and used to spread tales among them. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for two branches from date palms and placed one on each of their graves. We asked: O Messenger of Allah! Will this benefit them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes. As long as these two do not dry out, their punishment will be lessened.
