Chapter on Remembrance – On Allah boasting to His angels about those who remember Him, especially when combined with reflection
Hadith 813
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَرْحُومُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نَعَامَةَ السَّعْدِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ ؟ قَالُوا : جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ ، قَالَ : آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلا ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالُوا : وَاللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلا ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ عَلَى حَلْقَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا يُجْلِسُكُمْ ؟ " قَالُوا : جَلَسْنَا نَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ وَنَحْمَدُهُ عَلَى مَا هَدَانَا لِلإِسْلامِ ، وَمَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ ، قَالَ : " آللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَكُمْ إِلا ذَلِكَ ؟ " قَالُوا : وَاللَّهِ مَا أَجْلَسَنَا إِلا ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : " أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَحْلِفْكُمْ تُهْمَةً لَكُمْ ، وَلَكِنْ جِبْرِيلُ أَتَانِي ، فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَاهِي بِكُمُ الْمَلائِكَةَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) came to a gathering in the mosque and asked: Why are you people sitting here? The people replied: We are remembering Allah Almighty. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: By Allah! Is it only for this purpose that you are sitting here? They said: By Allah! We are sitting only for this purpose. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a gathering of his companions and asked: Why are you sitting here? They said: We are sitting to remember Allah and to praise Him for the guidance of Islam He has given us and for His favor upon us. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! Is it only for this purpose that you are sitting? The people replied: By Allah! We are sitting only for this purpose. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I did not make you swear an oath because I suspect you, but rather Jibreel came to me and informed me: Allah Almighty is expressing pride over you before the angels.
