Sayyiduna Muhajir bin Qunfudh (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was urinating at that time. He greeted (with salam), but the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to his greeting. First, he performed ablution, then, explaining the reason, he said: "I did not like to mention Allah Almighty while I was not in a state of ablution." (Regarding one word here, the narrator is in doubt.)
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, there is a clear statement of this matter. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked mentioning Allah Almighty while not in a state of ablution because it is more virtuous to mention (Allah) while in a state of ablution. It is not that it is not permissible for a person to mention his Lord while not in a state of ablution, because the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to mention Allah Almighty at all times.
