Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – On a narration that may seem to contradict the narration of Ali ibn Abi Talib for those not versed in hadith
Hadith 802
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنِ الْبَهِيِّ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ عَلَى أَحْيَانِهِ " . قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : قَوْلُ عَائِشَةَ : " يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ عَلَى أَحْيَانِهِ " أَرَادَتْ بِهِ الذِّكْرَ الَّذِي هُوَ غَيْرُ الْقُرْآنِ ، إِذِ الْقُرْآنُ يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُسَمَّى الَّذِي ذَكَرَ ، وَقَدْ كَانَ لا يَقْرَؤُهُ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ ، وَكَانَ يَقْرَؤُهُ فِي سَائِرِ الأَحْوَالِ .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to remember Allah at all times.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) saying: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to remember Allah at all times," by this she means the remembrance other than the Qur'an, because it is possible that by the words she used, she meant the Qur'an. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not recite it in the state of major ritual impurity (janabah). In all other states, he would recite it.
