Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – On the recommendation to recite the two protective surahs in one’s affairs
Hadith 797
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ زِرٍّ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لأُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ : إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ لا يَكْتُبُ فِي مُصْحَفِهِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ ، فَقَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ : قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ سورة الفلق آية 1 فَقُلْتُهَا ، وَقَالَ لِي : قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ سورة الناس آية 1 فَقُلْتُهَا " . فَنَحْنُ نَقُولُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Zirr narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) does not write the Mu'awwidhatayn in the Mushaf. So Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: Jibreel said to me: «قل اعوذ برب الفلق» The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) says: I recited it, then he said to me: «قل اعوذ برب الناس» The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) says: So I recited it. (Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) says) We say what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has said.
