The son of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this incident: His father told him that he had a storeroom in which there were dates. He used to keep watch over it, but the dates kept decreasing. One night, while he was guarding it, an animal appeared in the form of a young boy. Sayyiduna Ubayy says: I greeted him with salam, and he replied to my salam. I asked: Who are you, are you a jinn or a human? He said: I am a jinn. I said: Stretch out your hand towards me, so his hand was like that of a dog. Its hair was also like that of a dog. I asked: Is the creation of the jinn like this? He said: The jinn know that among them there are those who are stronger than me. I asked: Why do you do this? He said: I found out that you are a person who likes to give charity, so I wished that I could also get something from your grain. I asked: What thing can protect us from you people? He said: This verse, meaning Ayat al-Kursi. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I let him go. The next day, Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That wicked one spoke the truth.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The name of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b's son is Tufail bin Ubayy bin Ka'b.
