Hadith 772
Abu Tufail narrates: Nafi’ bin ‘Abd al-Harith met Sayyiduna ‘Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) at the place of ‘Usfan. Nafi’ was the governor of Makkah Mukarramah on behalf of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired: Whom have you appointed as your deputy in Makkah in your absence? He replied: Ibn Abza. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who is Ibn Abza? He replied: A freed slave. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have appointed a freed slave as deputy over those people? Nafi’ explained to him that he is a scholar of Allah’s Book. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Your Prophet has stated this: “Indeed, Allah elevates some people by this Qur’an and lowers others by it.”
