Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – On the information about completing the Quran every seven days
Hadith 756
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَوْهَبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَكِيمِ بْنِ صَفْوَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : جَمَعْتُ الْقُرْآنَ فَقَرَأْتُ بِهِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَمِنْ شَبَابِي ، فَقَالَ : " اقْرَأْهُ فِي كُلِّ عِشْرِينَ " ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَمِنْ شَبَابِي ، قَالَ : " اقْرَأْهُ فِي عَشْرٍ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَمِنْ شَبَابِي ، قَالَ : " اقْرَأْهُ فِي سَبْعٍ " ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، دَعْنِي أَسْتَمْتِعْ مِنْ قُوَّتِي وَمِنْ شَبَابِي ، فَأَبَى .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I compiled the Qur'an and recited it all in one night. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, he said: Recite the entire Qur'an in a month. The narrator says: I submitted, O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite the entire Qur'an in twenty days. I submitted, O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite it in ten days. I submitted, O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite it in seven days. I submitted, O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to benefit from my strength and youth, but the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept this from me.
