Chapter on Recitation of the Quran – On Allah’s favor upon the Prophet by granting every request he made for his Ummah regarding ease in reciting the Quran
Hadith 740
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عِيسَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ جَالِسًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ آخَرُ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً سِوَى قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاةَ دَخَلا جَمِيعًا ، عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ هَذَا قَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً أَنْكَرْتُهَا عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ الآخَرُ قِرَاءَةً سِوَى قِرَاءَةِ صَاحِبِهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَآ " ، فَقَرَآ ، فَقَالَ : " أَحْسَنْتُمَا ، أَوْ ، قَالَ : أَصَبْتُمَا " ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا ، قَالَ لَهُمَا الَّذِي قَالَ ، كَبُرَ عَلَيَّ ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا غَشِيَنِي ، ضَرَبَ فِي صَدْرِي ، فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَبِّي فَرَقًا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا أُبَيّ ، إِنَّ رَبِّي أَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ : أَنِ اقْرَأِ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، فَرَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ : أَنْ هَوِّنْ عَلَى أُمَّتِي مَرَّتَيْنِ ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ : أَنِ اقْرَأْهُ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، وَلَكَ بِكُلِّ رَدَّةٍ رَدَدْتُهَا مَسْأَلَتُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، فَقُلْتُ : اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لأُمَّتِي ، ثُمَّ أَخَّرْتُ الثَّانِيَةَ إِلَى يَوْمٍ يَرْغَبُ إِلَيَّ فِيهِ الْخَلْقُ حَتَّى أَبَرَّهُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was sitting in the mosque when a man entered and began to recite (the Qur'an). His recitation seemed unfamiliar to me. Then another man came and he recited differently from his companion. Then he completed his prayer. Then both of them went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So I said: O Messenger of Allah! This person has recited in a manner that seemed unfamiliar to me, then the other person recited differently from his companion. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to both of them: Recite. They recited, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Both of you have recited well. (The narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words:) You have recited correctly. The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said this to both of them, it was very hard on me. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) noticed what had come into my mind, he struck his hand on my chest, and it felt to me as if I were looking towards my Lord at that moment. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Ubayy! Indeed, my Lord has sent me a message that you should recite the Qur'an according to one mode (harf), but I requested Him twice to make it easy for my Ummah, so He commanded me that you may recite it according to seven modes (ahruf), and for every time you requested again, I grant you the right to ask (intercede) on the Day of Resurrection. I requested: O my Lord! Forgive my Ummah. Then I postponed the second supplication for that Day when the creation will be in need of it, until even Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) will be in need of it.
Hadith 741
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْقَارِي ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ هِشَامَ بْنَ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ ، فَقَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَؤُهَا ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْرَأَنِيهَا ، فَكِدْتُ أَنْ أَعْجَلَ عَلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ أَمْهَلْتُ حَتَّى انْصَرَفَ ، ثُمَّ لَبَّبْتُهُ بِرِدَائِهِ ، فَجِئْتُ بِهِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقُلْتُ : إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ هَذَا يَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْفُرْقَانِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مَا أَقْرَأْتَنِيهَا ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْرَأْ " ، فَقَرَأَ الْقِرَاءَةَ الَّتِي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقْرَأُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي : " اقْرَأْ " ، فَقَرَأْتُ ، فَقَالَ : " هَكَذَا أُنْزِلَتْ ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ ، فَاقْرَءُوا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُ " .
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard Hisham bin Hakim reciting Surah Furqan in a way different from the way I recite it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself taught me this Surah. At first, I was about to attack him, but then I waited. When he completed the prayer, I grabbed him by his cloak and took him to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: I have heard this person reciting Surah Furqan in a manner different from the way you taught me to recite it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Recite. He recited in the same way as I had heard him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This verse was revealed in this way. Then he said to me: Recite. I recited, and he said: It was revealed in this way. Indeed, this Qur'an was revealed upon seven modes, so recite in whichever of them is easy for you.
