Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was performing prayer and reciting the Qur’an in a low voice. He then passed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who was performing prayer and reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice. The narrator states: When both of them came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu Bakr! I passed by you while you were performing prayer and reciting in a low voice. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I was making Him hear Whom I was supplicating to. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umar! I also passed by you, and you were reciting in a loud voice. He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I wanted to wake up the sleeping person and hoped for reward through it. The narrator states: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): Raise your voice a little, and to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Lower your voice a little.
