Chapter on Poverty, Asceticism, and Contentment – On the command to look at those below you in worldly matters
Hadith 711
أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلانَ ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مَنْ فُضِّلَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْخَلْقِ ، أَوِ الرِّزْقِ ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ أَسْفَلُ مِنْهُ مِمَّنْ فُضِّلَ هُوَ عَلَيْهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "When a person looks at someone who has been given superiority over him in creation (i.e., appearance and form) or provision, he should also look at someone who is below that person, over whom he has been given superiority."
