Chapter on Poverty, Asceticism, and Contentment – On what is required of a person to not grieve much when missing a worldly desire
Hadith 707
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ ، عَنْ زِرٍّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَارٍ ، فَنَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا سورة المرسلات آية 1 فَأَخَذْتُهَا مِنْ فِيهِ ، وَإِنَّ فَاهُ رَطْبٌ بِهَا ، فَمَا أَدْرِي بِأَيِّهَا خَتَمَ فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثٍ بَعْدَهُ يُؤْمِنُونَ سورة الأعراف آية 185 أَوْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوا لا يَرْكَعُونَ سورة المرسلات آية 48 ، فَسَبَقَتْنَا حَيَّةٌ ، فَدَخَلَتْ فِي جُحْرٍ ، فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " وُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا ، كَمَا وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were present in a cave with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when this Surah was revealed to him. So I learned this Surah from his own recitation, even though it had just been revealed to him a short while ago. I do not know at which verse he ended it—was it at «فباي حديث بعده يومنون» or at this verse «واذا قبل لهم اركعو الا يركعون »? In the meantime, a snake appeared and then entered its hole, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You have been protected from its harm just as it has been protected from any harm from your side.
Hadith 708
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ ، بِنَسَا ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْجُعْفِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي غَارٍ ، فَنَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا ، فَإِنَّهُ لَيَتْلُوهَا ، وَإِنِّي لأَتَلَقَّاهَا مِنْ فِيهِ ، وَإِنَّ فَاهُ لَرَطْبٌ بِهَا إِذْ وَثَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا حَيَّةٌ ، فقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْتُلُوهَا " فَابْتَدَرْنَاهَا فَذَهَبَتْ ، فقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَقَدْ وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ ، كَمَا وُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a cave. Surah Mursalat was revealed to him. He recited it and I learned it from his tongue; it had been revealed to him just a short while before. Meanwhile, a snake appeared before us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Kill it! We quickly rushed towards it, but it went away. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It has been saved from your harm just as you have been saved from its evil.
