Chapter on Fear and Piety – Necessity of not feeling secure from Allah’s punishment, even with much effort in worship
Hadith 658
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلالٍ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، تَقُولُ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ رِيحٍ ، أَوْ غَيْمٍ ، عُرِفَ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ وَأَقْبَلَ وَأَدْبَرَ ، فَإِذَا مَطَرَتْ ، سُرَّ بِهِ وَذَهَبَ ذَلِكَ عَنْهُ ، فَسُئِلَ ، فقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنِّي خَشِيتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَذَابًا سُلِّطَ عَلَى أُمَّتِي " .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to become anxious on windy days or rainy days. He would walk here and there, and when the rain would start, he would become happy and his anxiety would go away. When he was asked about this, he said: "I fear that it might be a punishment that has been imposed upon my Ummah."
