Chapter on Fear and Piety – Clarification that a Muslim must balance hope and fear
Hadith 656
أَخْبَرَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ الْبَلْخِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي الْعَلاءُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْمُؤْمِنُ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْعُقُوبَةِ ، مَا طَمِعَ بِجَنَّتِهِ أَحَدٌ ، وَلَوْ يَعْلَمُ الْكَافِرُ مَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ ، مَا قَنَطَ مِنْ جَنَّتِهِ أَحَدٌ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "If a believing servant were to know the punishment present with Allah Almighty, then no one would hope for Paradise; and if a disbelieving person were to know the mercy of Allah Almighty, then no one would despair of Paradise."
