Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub Fazari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ask, “Has anyone seen a dream?” Then, whoever Allah willed, that person would relate his dream before you. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: “Last night, two angels came to me; they had been sent to me. Both of them said to me: ‘Come with us.’ So I went with them. We passed by a man who was lying down, and another man was standing at his head with a stone in his hand. He would strike the stone on the head of the man lying down, crushing his head with it, then the stone would roll away far. The man would go to retrieve the stone, pick it up, and return to the man. (The narrator says:) I think these words are also in the narration: until the man would become as he was before, then he would repeat the same action as he did the first time.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I asked: ‘Glory be to Allah! What is the matter with these two?’ The two angels said to me: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I kept moving with them until we came to a man who was lying on his back, and another man was standing beside him with an iron hook. He would come to one side of his mouth and tear his mouth up to the back of his neck, and then tear his nostril up to the back of his neck, and his eye up to the back of his neck. Then he would go to the other side and do the same as he did on the first side. When he finished the second side, the first side would be restored as it was before, and he would repeat the same action as he did the first time.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I said: Glory be to Allah! What is the matter with these two?’ The two angels said: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ I kept moving with them, then we came to a building like a furnace. The narrator named ‘Awf says: I think these words are also in the narration: from it were coming loud cries and voices. We looked inside, and there were naked men and women, and flames of fire were rising from beneath that furnace. When a flame reached them, they would scream and cry out. I asked: ‘Who are these people?’ The two angels said to me: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘We came to a river (the narrator says: I think these words are also in the narration) whose water was red like blood. In that river, a man was swimming, and on the bank of the river was another man who had collected many stones. When the swimmer came to the man who had the stones, he would open his mouth, and the other man would throw a stone into his mouth.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I asked: Who are these people?’ The two angels said to me: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘We kept moving, then we came to a man whose appearance was extremely ugly. Of all the ugly people you have seen in your life, he was like them. That man was near a fire, trying to kindle it, and he was running around it.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I asked the two of them: What is the matter with him?’ They said to me: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ Then we moved on until we came to a garden in which there was spring all around. In the middle of the garden stood a tall man, so tall that I could not see his head. I saw many children around him, but I had never seen anyone more beautiful than them.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I asked the two of them: Who are these people?’ They said to me: ‘Keep moving, keep moving.’ Then we kept moving until we came to a large, widespread tree. I had never seen a tree bigger or more beautiful than it. The two angels said to me: ‘Climb it.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘We climbed it, and we reached a city whose buildings were made of bricks of gold and silver. We came to the gate of the city. We asked for the gate to be opened, and it was opened. We said: Among the people here, half are those whom you have seen as the most beautiful people, and half are those whom you have seen as the most ugly.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The two angels said to those people: Go and enter that river. The river was wide and flowing. Its water was as white as pure milk. The people went and entered it. When they returned, their defects had disappeared, and their faces had become extremely beautiful.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The two angels said to me: This is the Garden of Eden, and this is your abode.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I looked up towards the heights, and there was a palace like a white cloud. The two angels said to me: This is your residence.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I said to them: May Allah bless you both. Give me a chance to enter it.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘They said to me: Not yet, you will enter it.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I asked: The astonishing things I saw last night, what is the reality of what I saw?’ The angels said to me: ‘We will tell you the reality of it. As for the first man you came to, whose head was being crushed with a stone, he was the one who learned the Qur’an and then neglected it, and used to sleep through the obligatory prayer times. As for the man whose mouth, eyes, and nostrils were being torn to the back of his neck, he was the one who would leave his house and tell a lie, and his lie would spread throughout the world. As for the naked men and women who were in the furnace-like building, they were the men and women who committed adultery. As for the man who was in the river and was taking stones into his mouth, he was the one who consumed usury. As for the extremely ugly man who was near the fire and was kindling it, he was ‘Malik’, the keeper of Hell. As for the tall man who was in the garden, he was Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him). As for the children around him, every child is born upon the natural disposition (fitrah).’ The narrator says: One of the Muslims asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling regarding the children of the polytheists?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The children of the polytheists are also (born upon the fitrah).’ As for those people, half of whom were beautiful and half ugly, they are those who did both good and bad deeds. Allah forgave them.”
