Chapter on Repentance – Allah’s grace to the repentant Muslim who dies with repentance, by making a Jew or Christian take his place in Hell
Hadith 630
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، أَنَّ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَسَعِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ ، حدثاه أنهما سمعا أبا بردة ، يُحَدِّثُ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لا يَمُوتُ رَجُلٌ مُسْلِمٌ إِلا أَدْخَلَ اللَّهُ مَكَانَهُ النَّارَ يَهُودِيًّا أَوْ نَصْرَانِيًّا " ، قَالَ : فَاسْتَحْلَفَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لا إِلَهَ إِلا هُوَ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ فَحَلَفَ ، فَلَمْ يُحَدِّثْنِي سَعِيدٌ أَنَّهُ اسْتَحْلَفَهُ ، وَلَمْ يُنْكِرْ عَلَى عَوْنٍ قَوْلَهُ .
Awn bin Abdullah and Saeed bin Abu Burdah narrate: Both of them heard Abu Burdah narrate to Umar bin Abdul Aziz, from his father, the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Whenever a Muslim dies, Allah puts a Jew or a Christian in his place into Hell."
The narrator states: Umar bin Abdul Aziz made them swear by the name of Allah, besides whom there is no deity, three times that their father narrated this hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), so they took the oath. The narrator named Saeed did not narrate to me that he was made to swear, but he also did not deny Awn's statement.
