Chapter on Seclusion – Clarification that seclusion in worship is next in virtue after striving in Allah’s cause
Hadith 605
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، أَنَّ بُكَيْرًا ، حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " أَلا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ النَّاسِ ؟ إِنَّ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ رَجُلٌ يُمْسِكُ بِعِنَانِ فَرَسِهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِالَّذِي يَتْلُوهُ ؟ رَجُلٌ مُعْتَزِلٌ فِي غَنَمِهِ ، يُؤَدِّي حَقَّ اللَّهِ فِيهَا ، وَأُخْبِرُكُمْ بِشَرِّ النَّاسِ ، رَجُلٌ يُسْأَلُ بِاللَّهِ وَلا يُعْطِي بِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I tell you about the best person? The best person is the one who, holding the reins of his horse in the way of Allah, (goes out for jihad). Shall I tell you about the one after him? He is the person who lives apart among his goats and fulfills Allah's right (i.e., zakat) regarding them. And shall I tell you about the worst person? He is the one who, when asked in the name of Allah, does not give."
