Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) while they were sitting in a gathering. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not tell you about the person who is the best in rank and status among you? We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is the person who holds the reins of his horse in the way of Allah (for jihad), until the legs of his (horse) are cut off or he is killed. Shall I not tell you about the person who is next to him? We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is the person who lives alone in a mountain pass, establishes prayer, gives zakat, and keeps himself away from the evil of people. Shall I not tell you about the worst person? We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is the person from whom something is asked in the name of Allah, and he does not give.
